Muse Cells: how this cell therapy works, evidence & cost

stress-tolerant pluripotent-like stem cells that home to damaged tissue.

Muse cells represent a subset of pluripotent stem cells isolated from bone marrow, adipose tissue, and other adult sources. Their defining characteristic is an exceptional capacity to migrate toward sites of tissue damage—a process known as homing—even under conditions of cellular stress that would render other stem cells inactive. Unlike most adult stem cells, Muse cells retain a broad developmental potential, allowing them to differentiate into multiple tissue types including neurons, cardiac muscle, and endothelial cells. They were first characterised in 2010 and derive their name from multilineage-differentiating stress-enduring (MUSE) properties. The autologous form—harvested from a patient's own tissues—eliminates immunological barriers, though expansion in culture requires careful optimisation. Early clinical work has been reported in stroke and heart disease contexts, where Muse cells have shown promising safety profiles. Their ability to self-repair and tolerate hostile microenvironments suggests potential applications in degenerative neurological and cardiac conditions. However, efficacy in human patients remains under investigation, and the exact mechanisms by which these cells exert therapeutic benefit are still being elucidated. Current research emphasises their regenerative signalling rather than direct cell replacement, though both pathways are being studied.

Evidence & approval status

For most conditions, therapy using Muse Cells is investigational — not an approved cure — outside established blood/immune transplantation. Check the published evidence and whether a registered trial is open with our candidacy check and cell-type selector.
