Question

What is the success rate of stem cell therapy for Multiple Sclerosis?

MS stem-cell outcomes lack a uniform definition. Some series report 'stabilisation' in a majority and 'improvement' in a minority, but from unblinded, non-randomised cohorts, often against historical rather than true controls. Relapse-free periods of 1–2 years are reported; whether that reflects treatment or natural variation is unclear. Reviews find moderate-quality evidence for temporary immune suppression, not durable repair.

What the evidence shows for Multiple Sclerosis

Ninety-two registered trials and 14 recruiting studies investigate stem-cell therapy in MS, across Europe, Asia and North America. Small series describe reduced relapse rates or stable disability scores; some show fewer inflammatory (gadolinium-enhancing) brain lesions over 6–12 months. MS is naturally variable, so separating stem-cell effects from disease fluctuation or concurrent disease-modifying drugs is difficult without controls. No trial has shown stem cells to be superior to established MS therapies; long-term data are sparse.
