The real cost of stem cell therapy in the EU
There is no defensible single EU price for a stem-cell intervention. Compare dated, itemised quotes only after verifying that the exact product and proposed use have a lawful regulatory route.
Price is not evidence of authorisation, quality, safety or efficacy. Two offers labelled stem-cell therapy may involve different products, doses, routes, clinical settings and follow-up, so a headline price comparison can be misleading.
Ask for a dated written quote that identifies the legal provider, exact product or procedure, dose, route, number of administrations and clinical location. It should separate assessment, diagnostics, product manufacture or supply, administration, routine medicines, observation and follow-up.
Request a separate statement of exclusions. Common areas to clarify include repeat testing, imaging, hospital admission, anaesthesia, companion costs, translation, travel, accommodation, extended stay and management of complications. Do not infer that an item is included because it appears in a marketing package.
For a clinical trial, ask in writing what the sponsor pays and what remains routine care or a participant expense. A legitimate trial may cover the investigational product and protocol procedures, but travel, accommodation, routine treatment or complication care may fall outside the sponsor budget. Paying a fee does not prove that research is improper, and free treatment does not prove that it is appropriate.
Insurance and public reimbursement depend on the patient's country, policy and treatment. GHIC/EHIC does not cover a trip whose purpose is planned private treatment. Experimental components may also be excluded from public funding routes. Obtain a written decision from the insurer or competent authority before relying on reimbursement.
Bulgaria uses the euro from 1 January 2026. Confirm that old lev figures have been converted at the official rate of €1 = BGN 1.95583 and that the payable currency is stated. For every country, record the quote date, taxes, exchange assumptions and validity period.
Compare like with like in a table: exact product identity, indication, regulatory route, administrations, included tests, follow-up, cancellation terms and complication responsibility. If those fields are missing, the prices are not comparable.
Before payment, obtain refund terms for ineligibility, cancellation and provider changes. Use a traceable payment method and retain the contract, invoice and correspondence. Never allow a temporary discount or financing offer to replace independent medical and regulatory review.
Use the cost worksheet, then verify the exact product, evidence, legal route and written quotation with an independent qualified clinician.
