Duration of benefit from MSC infusion in rheumatoid arthritis typically spans 6–12 months when disease-modifying drugs are concurrently maintained. Without conventional immunosuppression, relapse occurs more frequently, often within 3–9 months. Some centres propose booster infusions at 6–12 month intervals; limited long-term data exist on safety and efficacy of repeated cycles. Immune tolerance to the transplanted MSCs may wane over time, explaining declining durability. The underlying autoimmune disease biology means that MSC benefit, even if sustained, does not cure the condition; ongoing disease control requires either repeated MSC infusions or concurrent conventional therapy.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune condition where the immune system erroneously attacks joint synovium, causing inflammation, cartilage degradation, and bone erosion. Stem-cell investigations, primarily using placental mesenchymal stem cells, explore whether these cells can modulate the underlying immune dysregulation and reduce synovial inflammation.
