NMN vs NR: human research
NMN and NR both have human studies of NAD-related biology. That does not make them proven life-extension treatments or establish a winner. Two often-cited trials used different populations and endpoints: NMN for metabolic function in women with prediabetes, and NR for NAD metabolism in healthy middle-aged and older adults.

| Field | NMN trial, 2021 | NR trial, 2018 |
|---|---|---|
| Population | Postmenopausal women with prediabetes and overweight/obesity | Healthy middle-aged and older adults |
| Design | 10-week randomised placebo-controlled trial | Randomised placebo-controlled crossover; two 6-week periods |
| Reported signal | Muscle insulin sensitivity/signalling | NAD metabolism; short-term tolerability |
| Not established by this trial | Longer human lifespan | Longer human lifespan |
The population changes the question
A metabolic effect in women with prediabetes cannot simply be assigned to healthy younger adults. Likewise, an increase in NAD-related metabolites is not the same endpoint as improved physical function. These trials are examples of human evidence, not a head-to-head test of NMN against NR.
What the broader 2026 review found
The review included 33 human intervention studies and 80 rodent studies. Oral NMN and NR showed biological activity, but functional, metabolic and vascular findings in people were mixed or endpoint-specific. The review judged clinical effectiveness for anti-aging and wellness inconclusive.
