Masayo Takahashi led a landmark Japanese clinical research programme using retinal pigment epithelial tissue derived from induced pluripotent stem cells for age-related macular degeneration. The work connected patient-specific iPS-cell manufacturing, genomic and quality review, surgery and clinical follow-up.
A first-in-human research procedure is evidence about a defined protocol, not approval of other iPS-cell products or indications.
