Type 1 diabetes involves autoimmune loss of insulin-producing beta cells; Type 2 diabetes involves heterogeneous combinations of insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction. FDA-approved Lantidra (donislecel-jujn) is an allogeneic pancreatic-islet cellular therapy made from deceased-donor pancreatic cells for a narrow group of adults with Type 1 diabetes and recurrent severe hypoglycaemia despite intensive management. It is infused into the hepatic portal vein and requires concomitant immunosuppression; it is not a general stem-cell cure for Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Costs cannot be generalised across routine diabetes care, authorised islet transplantation and investigational cell products. Obtain an itemised estimate for assessment, product, procedure, immunosuppression where applicable, monitoring, travel and complication care. Can stem cells cure diabetes?
